A simple post-run cleaning routine takes only a few minutes and can protect your drivetrain, suspension, bearings, and electronics between race days.

## Why Cleaning Immediately Matters

After a dusty or muddy run, contaminants can work their way into places you cannot easily see.

Fine grit around the gears can increase wear. Mud packed into suspension components can restrict movement. Moisture around connectors and electronics can also create problems if the car is stored before it has properly dried.

The goal is not to completely strip the RC car after every run. Instead, focus on the areas where dirt causes the most damage.

## Step 1: Remove the Battery First

Before cleaning, disconnect and remove the battery.

This gives you a safer working setup and prevents accidental motor activation while you are handling the chassis. If you have been running a LiPo battery, inspect the pack and connector for visible damage, swelling, or unusual heat before putting it away.

Never store a battery while it is still hot from an aggressive run. Give it time to cool in an appropriate location before following your normal charging and storage routine.

## Step 2: Knock Off Loose Dirt

Start with the easiest dirt to remove.

Hold the RC car securely and use a soft detailing brush to loosen dust, grass, and loose mud around:

- Suspension arms
- Shock towers
- Wheels
- Motor area
- Gear cover
- Chassis
- Steering components

A brush is especially useful because it removes debris without forcing grit deeper into bearings or electrical components.

### Avoid the “Blast Everything With Water” Shortcut

Water can make cleaning look faster, but uncontrolled water pressure can push moisture into bearings, connectors, switches, and other sensitive areas.

For most RC cars, controlled brushing and targeted cleaning are a better first choice.

## Step 3: Check the Drivetrain

Spin the wheels by hand and listen.

Grinding, clicking, unusual resistance, or inconsistent wheel movement can indicate that dirt has reached a bearing, gear mesh, driveshaft, or differential.

Inspect the gear cover for packed debris. If your car has been running through sand or thick mud, this is one of the first places worth checking.

A clean drivetrain is not just about durability. Excess friction can also reduce efficiency and make your motor work harder.

## Step 4: Inspect the Suspension

Push each corner of the car down and watch how it returns.

The suspension should move smoothly without sticking. Check for:

- Mud around shock shafts
- Debris trapped near suspension pins
- Bent suspension components
- Loose screws
- Damaged shock caps
- Uneven suspension movement

If one corner behaves differently from the others, investigate before your next race.

Small suspension problems can become very noticeable once you are pushing the car hard through corners and jumps.

## Step 5: Clean the Tires and Wheels

Tires collect an impressive amount of track debris.

Remove stones, grass, and mud from the tread and inspect the tires for tears, separation, or excessive wear. Check the wheel hexes and make sure the wheels remain firmly attached.

For racers, tire condition deserves special attention because worn or contaminated tires can change traction dramatically.

A perfectly tuned suspension setup cannot compensate for tires that have lost their intended grip.

## Step 6: Finish With a Quick Inspection

Before putting the car away, give it one final visual check.

Look for loose screws, damaged wires, cracked plastic, bent links, and anything that looks different from the previous run.

This is where a five-minute routine becomes a performance advantage.

Instead of discovering a problem halfway through your next race, you can identify it while the car is already on your workbench.

You do not need a huge workshop to maintain an RC car properly.

Create a simple routine:
